Welcome to Miami Public Schools, Home of the Wardogs!
Dear Wardog Family,
I find it a very humbling honor to serve as the Superintendent of Miami Public Schools. I am a proud graduate of Miami High School. I received a B.A. Ed. in Social Studies Education from Northeastern State University, a Master of Education degree in Administration, Curriculum, and Supervision from the University of Oklahoma, and my Superintendent Certification from the University of Oklahoma, Tulsa. My wife, Madeline, is a fellow educator with a Master of Education degree in School Counseling. She is working for MPS as a Counselor at Roosevelt, Washington, and Wilson. We have three children, Harper (age 6), Hollis (age 5), and Heston (age 2). Harper is in first grade at Roosevelt Elementary, and Hollis is in kindergarten at Wilson Early Childhood Center. They are very excited to be Miami Wardogs! Our family loves the community of Miami, where we have lived for the last seven years, and we look forward to being a part of Miami Public Schools again.
During my career, I have worked in high school, middle school, and elementary school settings. These experiences helped me develop a thorough understanding of what education looks like across the grade-level spectrum. I have proudly served as an educator in Oklahoma City Public Schools, Miami Public Schools, and Welch Public Schools. During my previous tenure at Miami Public Schools, I served as a middle school teacher, Nichols Upper Elementary Dean of Students, and Principal of Miami High School. In these roles, I built many strong relationships with other educators and staff members. I look forward to working with these individuals again in our efforts to keep Miami Public Schools moving in a positive direction.
Over the last five years, The Wardog Way has been a compelling vision that has resulted in significant gains for Miami Public Schools. I believe it is a vision, mission, and mindset that should continue. After a challenging year, I believe that an appropriate addition to this vision is the concept of “moving forward together.” Every person who works in the education system is important and plays a critical role in the success of our students. I hope that in our time together, I can earn your respect and trust. I promise that I will try every day to work my hardest for our staff and our students. Our mission as we move forward is to provide the best possible education in Northeast Oklahoma to our students. It is my hope and prayer that you will join me in the journey ahead.
Moving Forward Together,
Nick Highsmith
Superintendent
